How to Replace an ABS Gear Ring and Plane Teeth

May 06,2023

If you have an anti-lock braking system (ABS) on your car, it’s likely equipped with a gear ring and plane teeth. These are used to detect a wheel’s speed and rapidly pump the brakes when it is about to lock up. The ABS helps maintain traction and steering control during braking, improving vehicle stability and safety.

If your ABS light has been blinking for a while, you may need to replace one of these components. You should also look into your vehicle’s service manual to find out which sensor or wiring might be causing the problem.

When you do need to replace your ring gear, follow these instructions:

Remove Your Old Ring Gear
Once the ring gear is off of the carrier, carefully cut into the steel ring gear as far as you can without cutting into the aluminum flange on the front side of the carrier. You can use a Dremel tool or an abrasive cutoff wheel of some kind to do this, but be sure to work slowly and carefully.

Place Your New Ring Gear into the Freezer
Once you have your new ring gear, put it in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes. This will shrink the carrier and expand the ring gear enough to overcome the interference fit that the parts have at room temperature.

Install Your New Ring Gear
After you’ve installed your new ring gear, make sure that you’re aligning it correctly with the crankshaft and cylinders. If you’re not, you’ll end up with a kickback when you start the engine.
